She took no revenge, but all would not be well with Theseus, especially where women were concerned. He forgot the promise he made to his father—that if he came home with the Monster dead, he would change the black sails he set out with, for white ones. He forgot and his father, believing him dead, cast himself down from the Acropolis into the sea, which must have been closer then. Theseus takes over, but his reign is marked throughout by a rooted stupidity in regard to women. His only happy union is with Hypolita, the Queen of the Amazons—who fought with him in all his battles, and bore him Hippolytus—on whom Theseus, misled by a later wife into believing he had raped her, utters so terrible a curse that the youth crashes his chariot and is killed.
